About

Native to inland parts of south-eastern Australia, this small fish, once widespread, has suffered a severe population decline and is limited to a few sites, mainly in northern Victoria. It prefers slow flowing or still shallow waters with sand or silt substrates, and can also be found in deeper habitats with dense aquatic vegetation. They can grow up to approximately 7.6 cm in length and interestingly the scales are almost circular and barely overlap.

eDNA Test

This species eDNA probe was developed to be specific to individuals from the last remaining populations in northern Victoria.
