About

More abundant in lakes than in flowing water, the freshwater catfish is a carnivorous bottom feeder, eating a wide variety of foods. The hipster of the fish world, distinctively it has four pairs of whiskery barbels like a beard around the mouth. Once widespread in eastern Australia, populations in the Murray-Darling Basin have declined significantly since the 1980s.
