Yellow Fever Mosquito

Aedes aegypti
Yellow Fever Mosquito eDNA test
About

The primary species is responsible for transmitting viruses such as dengue and Zika between people. Originating from Africa, but now distributed globally in tropical and subtropical regions. This mosquito can be recognised by white markings on its legs and a marking in the form of a lyre on the upper surface of its thorax.

It is currently only found in north Queensland, but once had a distribution that extended through NSW. It is considered a large biosecurity threat to areas of Australia outside its current range.

eDNA Test

This species eDNA probe is broadly applicable and has been used in biosecurity programs to monitor for local breeding. Extends the ability to detect Ae. aegypti by 4-6 weeks post-eclosion in water containers.
