Native to Southeast Asia, this species has now spread to other parts of the world through international travel and the transport of cargo. Called a tiger mosquito because of its striped appearance, it is a vector of several viruses including dengue, yellow fever, Chikungunya and Zika. It is not currently found in Australia and is considered a large biosecurity threat.

This species eDNA probe is broadly applicable and could be used in biosecurity programs to monitor for local breeding. Extends the ability to detect Ae. albopictus by 4-6 weeks post-eclosion in water containers.
