Caring for Country and Genetic Science: Unveiling an Artwork by Gerard Black
29 May 2026
We are delighted to formally unveil this artwork by esteemed Worimi Artist, Gerard Black. Commissioned by EnviroDNA, this is a meaningful collaboration representing the relationship between Indigenous science and genetic science.
Masterfully depicted in this artwork are the flowing life forces of Country across land and water. A valley of culturally significant species including the platypus, freshwater eel, and wedge-tailed eagle, represent the species that thrive from solutions that support Caring for Country. Every stroke is unique, and layer together in rich harmony.
Indigenous expertise in Caring for Country is increasingly being called upon in the face of Australia's complex environmental challenges. Our Traditional Owner eDNA Training Program launched with a vision ‘to place the most comprehensive biodiversity data in the hands of all Traditional Owners’. Through our partnerships, we are committed to building collaborative monitoring programs that support Indigenous-led management with measurable data, and remain guided by the experience, values, and outcomes gained by First Nations peoples.
We are deeply thankful to Gerard Black for this artwork to help tell its story and share with our community. Learn more about the artist: Gerard Black | Baiyami Art
