This project is centred around the World Heritage-listed Budj Bim Cultural Landscape on Gunditjmara Country in southwest Victoria. With waterways engineered and cared for by the Gunditjmara for thousands of years, this project explores harnessing cultural knowledge and environmental DNA (eDNA) to support biodiversity monitoring and the ongoing management of Country. Through cultural leadership and eDNA insights, this project demonstrates how ecological monitoring and cultural heritage can be integrated to support a deeper understanding of waterways, species, and landscapes.

The Gunaikurnai Land and Waters Aboriginal Corporation (GLaWAC) partnered with EnviroDNA through the Traditional Owner eDNA Training Program to explore how environmental DNA (eDNA) can support biodiversity monitoring and Caring for Country. In this case study, GLaWAC undertake eDNA water sampling approaches to monitor biodiversity at culturally significant sites across the Gippsland Lakes region. The project showcases how the Traditional Owner eDNA Training Program is delivered and the impact of combining Traditional Ecological Knowledge with modern genetic science.
